City Rebrand: Creating buzz in an up-and-coming outdoor hotspot

Geographically, Franklin, New Hampshire has natural resources that make it an attractive and practical place to live. 150 years ago this area, known as Franklin Falls, relied on the Winnipesaukee and Pemigewasset Rivers to power mill buildings and drive the local economy. Those same rivers, combined with a new vision for Franklin as a regional outdoor destination through the new Mill City Park, have created many new opportunities for growth. In 2021, the city committed to bringing Franklin Falls back and highlighting the exciting plans for the area. We worked with the City of Franklin to re-introduce this concept while setting it up for its outdoor future.

Branding and logo design
Franklin Falls is smack-dab in the middle of New Hampshire, making it a real intersection of work and play. Boasting class 5 rapids for whitewater kayaking, over 150 miles of trails, access to shopping, and a ski mountain, the vibe needed to be adventurous. Using hand-drawn type, the creative team designed an illustrated logo that highlights the nostalgia of a bygone time. To modernize things, we developed a bright color palette inspired by outdoor equipment like kayaks, life vests, bikes, and climbing gear. We also worked with the city to develop the theme “Find Your Flow”, a nod to the outdoor atmosphere and river currents. We then carried the color palette and style over to a brochure, economic development presentation, and a lively illustrated map of the area.

What’s more fun than designing an adventure map for an up-and-coming outdoorsy New Hampshire town? Not much. Using the color palette developed by us and an illustrative approach, we created a whimsical, detailed design that’s a Where’s Waldo of the Franklin area.
